THE SP RHODES MATERIAL STANDARD
No Nylon No Cotton/Polyester

No shortcuts where they matter. We build our premium horse show accessories around materials selected for demanding outdoor use — from the primary fabric to the thread, trim, and finishing details.

Built for the Horse Show Environment

The product is only as good as what holds it together.

Horse show decor lives outdoors. It is exposed to sun, humidity, dust, rain, repeated handling, transportation, storage, and an entire season of setup and teardown.

That is why SP Rhodes builds our premium horse show accessories using Marine Sunbrella® fabric and Sunbrella® thread wherever the construction allows.

The Material Behind the Product

Made with genuine Sunbrella® performance fabric and Sunbrella® thread for exceptional outdoor durability, color retention, and long-term performance.

01 / OUR STANDARD

Marine Sunbrella®

Built for outdoor environments where appearance and performance both matter.

  • UV-resistant color. Solution-dyed performance fibers are designed to hold their color through extended exposure to sunlight.
  • Made for outdoor use. Marine-grade Sunbrella® is engineered for demanding environments, not simply decorative indoor applications.
  • Water and moisture resistance. A practical advantage in humid barns, outdoor showgrounds, sudden weather changes, and repeated transport.
  • Stain resistance. Horse show decor needs to withstand dust, dirt, hands, tack rooms, and everyday stable life.
  • Consistent appearance. Premium performance fabric helps the finished product continue to look polished through repeated use.
02 / THE DETAIL THAT MATTERS

Sunbrella® Thread

Premium outdoor fabric should not be sewn together with thread that becomes the weakest point of the product.

  • Designed for exterior exposure. Outdoor-rated thread is better suited to repeated exposure to sunlight and changing weather conditions.
  • Helps maintain seam integrity. Strong fabric means little if the stitching begins to deteriorate first.
  • Better long-term color performance. Thread that fades faster than the surrounding fabric can quickly make an otherwise premium product look old.
  • Built as a complete system. We consider fabric, thread, trim, piping, embroidery, and finishing as part of the same product — not separate components.
Where Lower-Cost Construction Falls Short

Not all equestrian products are built for more than one season.

Substituting standard nylon borders or cotton/polyester piping may reduce the initial manufacturing cost, but those materials are not necessarily engineered to perform in harsh outdoor environments. Sun and moisture are the two factors that influence how long a product will last - we use fabrics manufactured to solve these problems.

01

Uneven UV Performance

Products made with Sunbrella as the main fabric and nylon trim and cotton/polyester piping means the borders, piping, or thread can age differently — compromising the appearance of the entire piece.

02

Moisture Absorption

Cotton-containing components can absorb and retain moisture, increasing mildew and drying time. Thse products are less resilent to wear in unpredictable horse show environments.

03

Premature Deterioration

A product can only perform as well as its weakest component. Borders, piping, or stitching that deteriorate before the primary fabric can shorten the useful life of the entire piece.

04

Color Mismatch Over Time

Different fibers respond differently to sunlight, cleaning, moisture, and repeated use. The result can be a body fabric that still looks beautiful beside trim or piping that does not.

05

Loss of Structure

Piping and border materials help define the finished shape. Materials not selected for demanding outdoor applications may soften, stretch, shrink, or otherwise age differently.

06

A False Economy

Saving on trim, piping, or thread at production can become expensive when an otherwise serviceable stall guard, banner, pillow, or drape requires premature repair or replacement.

THE SP RHODES STANDARD
We do not start with premium outdoor fabric and then compromise the product with components chosen simply because they cost less.

Our objective is to build horse show products that continue to look professional through repeated use, transportation, cleaning, sun exposure, and changing weather. That means considering every material that goes into the finished product — including the parts most customers never think to ask about.
